ReachA Poem by Anna MarieBlazing bridges all around me, set by me All thats left is one thats old and rickety I could set the torch and burn that one too Or i could crawl across it beneath the smoke If i make it what will be there, more flames or you? The way across, stumbling and near misses Will there be opened arms and welcome kisses Why should the way forward be so difficult? Allow the flames to engulf me? either ends the same But i think i can hear you calling my name Each bridge that burns, the flame was earned Mistakes I made along the broken way I couldnt begin to shake the pain it churned inside Only thing to do was strike the match and turn my back Screams behind each blaze echos the corners of my mind Beyond one of those bridges is a little girl, innocent She wishes on stars, wishbones, and puffy flowers Growing up in a flash, innocence never lasts Hers was the first bridge to go, her I have never known The wishes floated away in storms long ago Many more bridges along the way now ablaze Among them phases of her tragic life She was a mother, a lover, and a friend None of these titles suited her to the end Destruction is all she’ll ever know I am her, and now here we go….. Across the last and final bridge Take a breath, dont look down, dont look back Something has to be better than all of that Crawl, scramble, reach….reach….reach…. © 2023 Anna Marie |
