Grief plays heavy on the heart

Grief plays heavy on the heart

A Poem by Gee
"

Winter, like grief often lingers on. For Deb and mum

"
How patient spring who bides her time
whilst winter lingers on,
as yellow, white, break frozen earth
to a lone wren's sweet birdsong,
that carries through fog heavy air
'tween chestnut, birch and pine
to trail away beyond the eye
beyond all hopes of mine.
For winter like my sadness dwells
plays heavy on the heart,
oh how I wish this ache to cease
for the darkness to depart.

Thank you sir
Grief indeed lays on our hearts like fog-draped winter. It is a season without borders. Do not despair. Spring does return, eventually. And with it, hope!

Hi John, thanks for popping in.
Your poem is a beautiful meditation on the cyclical nature of time and the way that spring always follows winter, no matter how long and dark the winter may seem. I love the way you describe spring as "patient" and "biding her time," as it suggests a sense of hope and resilience that is both comforting and inspiring. The way you describe the "frozen earth" breaking open to the sound of a wren's sweet birdsong is particularly lovely, as it captures the sense of renewal and rebirth that comes with the changing of the seasons. The final stanza, where you describe winter as a metaphor for sadness that plays "heavy on the heart," is especially poignant, as it speaks to the way that grief and pain can feel all-encompassing and unending. Overall, I think this poem is a beautiful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always the promise of new life and new beginnings.

A very belated thank you
Yes, grief does play heavy on the heart, and though it eased with time, that ache never really ceases does it.

Beautifully written.

A very, very belated thank you
it sure does. the weight of winter's freeze along with darkness. must be why my back aches after shoveling snow. they say that there is a lot of depression during winter. is why i always look for crocuses poking their heads up through the snow in spring. good and deep stuff you give us here ... :)
