Just simple words written in the quiet, small hours of morning
There is no highly polished brass plaque
or words etched into cold, coloured granite,
as this she said would place a burden upon us,
make us feel duty bound to stay, visit,
if for no other reason than to polish, tidy, place fresh flowers,
and this in her mind both a waste of time and money.
Would be better, she said, her memorial be our beating hearts and memories,
as these would not be a bind, would not tie us to one place,
would have her life, love, memory, "portable," ever present
waiting patiently in the shadows of our sub conscious
to be visited, called forward into the light,
even if the light, as is mainly the case, be the darkness,
the quiet small hours of early mornings
when as all sleep the minds of those silently mourning and missing remember...
Such a sacred and abiding memorial. One that we tiptoe into in every precious moment of solitude...beyond that cold, hard granite, in a place of flowers and light and love, in our very own hearts....

I think you are writing about your mum. This is a beautiful piece Gee because it brings out the spiritual in her nature. She knew that graveyards aren't the best place for memories. The best memories are in the heart, that spring forth like a gifted bouquet when you least expect them. A lovely piece you have written here. Right up my street. When I visit my Dad's grave, I end up crying. The rest of the time, my memories of him make me smile.

You made more than sense, every line reminded me of my beloved grandma. The hours we would spend together; the poetry we shared, and she will forever be in my memory.
You have made me cry, but I still say thank you for rekindling memories that are so very precious to me.

I so agree with this approach! There is nothing physical on this earth that can take the place of having one's loved one as a daily angel on one's shoulder, a constant inner reminder, as if the one who's gone is sharing my life! I love how you describe this in all the details of how your mum wanted things done (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Indeed it does. This is a very moving piece about grief. There is a natural tendency to want to memorialize those departed, but here we have a pre-death request against such an effort. Sometimes a cherished memory can be the most effective memorial.
Devoted family man and lover of life.
Simply written, easily understood "stuff" for those without code breaking skills. You will NEVER need Google to understand me:)
