Slowly, as if by magic,
words started to form in the condensation
on the pane by her now never used chair.
Words written when in solitary,
when human touch deemed dangerous,
so life threateningly so that contact not allowed.
At first, to her, it was a game,
a game in second childhood enjoyed,
touching glass, mouthing words, blowing kisses,
but this turned to frustration, tears, confusion,
confusion in a mind already confused
and in the process of " deleting" 85 years
of life, living, memories.
They, the carers, deemed regular visits to distressing,
so weekly became fortnightly, became monthly,
until the inside face no longer recognised the outside face,
and the visits then became to distressing for both
and so stopped, as did a frail and broken heart...
Slowly, as if by magic,
on the pane by her now never used chair
"I love you" and a shakily drawn heart appeared.
It is a sad tale. It makes me think of this pandemic and how many people it has affect on this level especially those who maybe in a nursing home with dementia and with no visits allowed it has cause depression and quicker deterioration of their memories.
Honestly I did not fully get this at first, perhaps because I have not yet experienced a loved one enduring such a condition (although I do have a grandfather who seems to be experiencing the beginnings of dementia). Maybe it is worth sharing that instead I perceived the pane as like reflection in a window, and the communications to be like those with ghosts through the veils of life and death. I know now that is not necessarily the intention of what the speaker describes although, regardless, this is haunting. Thank you for sharing.
This dreaded virus has caused so much distress. Add dementia into the mix and it becomes heartbreaking. Dementia sufferers in nursing homes will think they have been completely abandoned by their loved ones. My mum hasn't got that far yet, but she is certainly starting to lose it. She gets too confused with technogy and won:t even answer her phone now sometimes. Tears all round. Sad piece Gee which is so relatable.

It is a sad, sad situation that many find themselves in. Hopefully the double jab will allow you and your mum to be reunited in the near future.
Hope you are keeping well. I'm off to work in the cold and sleet soon :(( Oh, and the gas service engineer cut off my boiler yesterday as it is "unsafe" so no not water or heating until he returns Monday :)
Thanks for dropping in
My mom has dementia and had to be moved into a nursing home. We can't see her other than FaceTime but she isn't very savy with that. I miss her. This strikes many chords as she lived with me up until October.
Great write!
As an R.N. I know how devastating this topic is for family and the loved one. I have seen countless faces lost. This is beautiful sadness. Well written

There's always been a time to think and act ahead, not to be morbid but to give back what we were given. Find or make that moment when to sit aside or opposite parents, a parent.. darlings, darling, then say or whisper, write or sign, 'I love you, always have, always will. Always.' Your words are precious, Gee,

Such a heartbreaking scene you describe here....and unfortunately it is being played out all over the world. We can not see loved ones, close friends...can not have the human interaction we all need. Hopefully the new year will bring us better times, Gee. Your words are powerful and paint quite the picture. Lydi**
Hello my dear friend. Life teaches us many things. I returned to Michigan to take care of my grandparent. Once, they took care of me. We receive what we give.

The above lines. Touched my mind and my heart. Thank you for sharing the powerful poetry and your thoughts.

We must and we don't complain. You are welcome my dear friend.
Powerful. Touching. Captivating. Very well penned, explained, and expressed. Golden meaning and timeless write. Altogether a wonderful poem. Getting old is scary, being old is sad. Of course one does not need to be old to experience this, sad to say. If I understand you right. tyfs
This is a very powerful statement on how it often goes for old people, all the more heart-wrenching becuz you make no attempt to state your observations with drama, but instead, your words carry the same quiet hollow loneliness as the scene your words paint. Even tho I love that your message isn't blaming anyone or any entity, there's still a note of silent regret, possibly rethinking the way things went, always questioning whether it was wise to follow the trend of what others recommended. You don't say this, but it's hard not to feel it lingering there between the lines. I'm really sorry for what you're going thru, but it's truly a gift to share the feelings so acutely & accurately (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
