The old leather belt

The old leather belt

A Poem by Gee
"

Some things accompany us through life.

"
Oh what a life the two had shared
the ups, downs, joys and pain,
it'd seen him wed and then divorced
then wed to her again.
It was there when both his boys were born
then attended both their wakes,
witnessing the numbing grief
caused when a futile war life takes.
Every birthday, anniversary,
gatherings of every kind,
the old leather belt around his spreading waist
you'd be always sure to find.
And now as he lay resigned to death
with his twice wed wife nearby,
his constant support for near 60 years
was there to hear her cry.
Twas fitting then that when interred
in his oft used Sunday best,
the old leather belt would accompany him,
together forever both laid to rest.

I recently had to give up my favorite pair of maryjanes . . . they saw me thru learning to walk again . . . maybe I should write that poem! (You are SUCH an inspiration!) I love how you see a poem in an ordinary thing & it balloons into a huge tapestry of a life. The married twice thing -- my bro did that, but it still didn't take. I might be too jaded & anti-social to fully appreciate a life lived like this, but I can still appreciate how this describes a big swath of people (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

That belt symbolizes security to me. Even after getting divorced, she came back because she knew he was the one to come back to.

Poems can come from anywhere, really. As long as people like them, who cares how or why they came about.

Nice one, Gee.

Cheers Relic :)
Does it matter where the poem came from, Gee! Strange how thoughts leap up and nudge. From what I know about gents's belts, they're as personal and essential as many a woman purse. The belt has been around the body, the purse has been held in the hand. Both items are personal and essential, once used they become comfortable and quite quickly fit whatever art of bod they're intended for for.

No.. no need to wonder where or why the poem. t's a wonder and more than worthy. A soft, dear poem.
