After all unwrapped and each unboxed
he sat amongst his toys,
no thought of santa, Christmas time,
oblivious to the noise,
of siblings playing, father's voice,
of carols being sung,
of cheery greetings offered up
each time the doorbell rung.
For as grateful as he was for all,
the gifts and Christmas fayre,
his eyes and thoughts were focused on
only mother's empty chair...
Well, that last line proves my eyes aren't made of glass. Perfectly written and stunned me into silence. (Yes, this is me being quiet)
I have a lump in my throat and obviously something in my eye. I need to leave the room and go cough manfully for a while.
All the sadder to know we are all that little boy.
I feel bad now for assuming by the title it was going to be about an ungrateful kid who only got one playstation from santa. My head is hung. Shame on me.

Wonderfully written Gee...a fitting tribute for all those we miss. My mum is still here, although she is 95 and in a nursing home suffering with dementia...
I am sorry for your loss...the first Christmas is always the worst as the wounds are still fresh.
Take care friend

Yes, first Christmas without your Mum. That will be tough for you Gee. However you have penned a fine poem here. It reminds me that Christmas isn't always the happiest time for some. For the bereaved, the elderly and the lonely, it can be filled with sadness.

Aye, tis my first Christmas as an "orphan". I miss going over to mums to drop off and pick up pressies, to decorate her tree, to moan at her for stocking up with enough food to feed a small army even though she was in her own.
My heart goes out to you Jacob.
Thanks for dropping in and commenting, it's always good to hear from you.

this strikes such a chord, Gee.
I am missing both my folks so much this Christmas...I used to be planning my Christmas trip to NC to see them...no longer...
and it just feels different...something that was there, is no longer.
makes the holiday feel so different.
