Shhhhh, listen, can you hear her.

Shhhhh, listen, can you hear her.

A Poem by Gee
"

The changing seasons

"
Her breath is but a chill whisper,
a whisper that stirs the leaves of trees ablaze with autumnal hues,
these lit by a fading sun that will climb barely half sky height
before tumbling over an ever darkening horizon
casting long, grasping, shadows.
Flowers drained by summers oppressive heat bow down their heads in deference laying petals before her,
a pastel coloured carpet to welcome her arrival
this littered with burnished, over ripe fruit
given up by a host to tired to any longer hold.
A lone squirrel busies itself, scurrying, collecting, hiding,
for it too knows of her coming,
will see her in then sleep her away
whilst birds on the wing, soar, fly with her,
but only briefly before leaving for warmer climes
returning only when she herself is taking her leave.
Me, I have heard her whisper,
felt her chill breath on bared skin
and am already mourning the season just passed,
wishing that the oft bemoaned summer heat be back.
In hope I pray she be meek, mild, not raise her voice,
and spring will not be welcomed in with blessed relief
from that which went before.

I think this is the reason for this melancholy I'm feeling.
I am missing summer. :)

Me too. HATE THE COLD !
Thank you
this is cool, really seems to show how everything ends, everything moves on, even if it seems like the only one standing still is you, at the same time it also gives a kind of refreshing relaxing truth

Thank you..
This is a glorious tribute to the seasons. The delicate anthropomorphisms of the seasons and the effect they leave us with is remarkable in your write. Beautiful Gee, probably one of my favorites of yours.

Best,
M.

A very poetic piece, Gee...

Just as She soon arrives for you, She has just left us here downunder. She was quite tame this year, but left no tears upon our soil. The driest Winter in quite some time. Yet the Winter you know is infinitely harsher than your Sun drenched cousins here are used to. I hope she behaves herself and touches you kindly upon her coming.

Some wonderful lines throughout this one. Marvellous description and personification of the Ice Queen herself and her approaching effects on the land and those who inhabit it.

Very well written and conceived.

Cheers Doodley, hoping she behaves :))
It seems we both had the same train of thought! I think autumn speaks more to a poet than any other season. Here in my corner of the world, we usually feel it coming before we bare witness to its majestic offerings. Beautiful lines and imagery throughout, Gordon!

Such a beautiful piece of biding farewell to Summer and bracing for the coolness and darkness that winter brings....sighhh I will mourn as well and begin to yet again to long for a speedy recovery for Spring!

Thank you Carolynn, I'm glad you enjoyed he read.
Never fear, Gee, you're light up the stage with this gem. Favorite lines: a fading sun that will climb barely half sky height, before tumbling over an ever darkening horizon, casting long, grasping, shadows. Your focus on the melancholy of the season rather than holiday joys and seasonal charm tells me that winter is not your favorite solstice. At my age, I have begun to notice a shrinking world marked by erosion of mobility and loving smiles -- the price of a long life well lived. Still, a brisk walk in the morning chill of late fall warms the heart. Keep up the good work

Thank you for your kind words
I myself love Autumn. The heat of summer does its best to moisten my clothes with sweat, making it uncomfortable.

Nice use of language in this Gee. You give it a documentary vibe in a way, describing in vivid detail the scene before you.

Well done.

Cheers Relic, appreciate you taking the time to both read and comment.
Hope you are well.
While the end appeals to the longing for summer and warmth, you do so well in the previous stanzas paying homage to my favorite season of all: AUTUMN!!!! I just love the language pouring off your tongue, lofty, whimsical, poetic and a gently beautiful lulling into this magical season of change! You also add in crisp resonant sounds and bright, bountiful imagery, bursting with the colors and scenes of autumn. Despite my obvious impartiality toward fall, I’m drawn most to the lines about the flowers bowing in deference and offering the petals strewn about the ground in an offering to the coming of fall.. gaahhhh!! That’s sooo spectacular. I love writing about autumn, but this may just be my favorite poem about it!!! So well done!! :) cheers from ‘Merica
