Today, the sun laboured to barely half sky height,
a long summer's exertions seemingly wearying it's ascent
before it slid slowly to the horizon,
casting shadows long and eastward.
Trees that were lit like beacons
as autumn died its beautiful death,
stood stark, arthritic, naked,
their branches grasping for a warmth now gone.
A lone crow cawed, it's cry haunting
as it echoed through the copse,
before trailing off into the distance across fields now barren,
summers harvest long since reaped.
In the coming weeks, months, all will be dusted white,
crisp underfoot, as winter slowly, surely, takes hold.
I shivered, pulled my collar around my ears,
" roll on spring... "
Oh how I dread the coming Winter! Right after Christmas time, a light-deprived depression sets in. My body never seems to get warm. I live in fear of falling on the ice covered sidewalks. Spring can't come soon enough for me.

This is one of the very best descriptions of this time of the year, as it appears to me out my vast mountain panorama . . . I watch & watch as the season unfolds, wishing I could find a better way to describe it . . . which is what you've done here, gotten inside my head & found those perfect words! I love it! I can see & feel it! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I love the atmosphere and the canvas you painted with words. I had the thought ... the sky never looked so blue than when above a blanket of white. I love those mornings when I awaken to that blanket of white, covering everything with the crisp silence of winter. It has a way of brightening the world, and that shroud of silence makes me listen even more. Beautiful!

Your entire poem is full of magical language.. that selected quote consists of merely a small glorious part of a song to .. .. time perhaps five months ahead. So, why not see the interim's magic, Gee.
Perhaps I'm an oddity because tho i dislike the bite of early morning dog-walking, etc.. i find Winter a beautifully haunting time. Like most living beings, seasons need a lifestyle, painkillers, elixirs, time to sigh and sleep. (Even Summer needs it cool breezes). Man can fly to the moon and dive the depths.. surely adding an extra sweater, wearing thicker boots, preparing for whatever.. , inhaling pure air, happy without midges and other nasties... isn't beyond him-her!
And all the while, lurking under the crispness of earth, things are happening. At first with creeking snores 'til snowdrops bloom and birds remind selves how to sing again. Perhaps!
That said, your writing touches and teaches and stays memorable.
