Etched In Stone

Etched In Stone

A Poem by Gee
"

An oldie found and re posted

"
And with their first breath
etched the first date,
the hyphen is then their life led,
be it days, be it weeks,
many decades or more,
'til a full stop declares
" They are dead "

You can write your story in erasable graphite on paper, or with force, wielding a chisel, pounding stone. You would think the story would be the same on different canvas.

But effort makes all the difference. Effort makes the story. Enjoyed your poem. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers Joe...
There's a cemetery I walk through and I see the same graves. One family is buried in the same plot. The death dates are all the same.

Glad you found this, interesting to read and think about.

Cheers Matthew, glad you enjoyed
Strangely I wander through graveyards. Sometimes you find the most heartbreaking poetry. As here. You have captured a life in few words. It was said that
Matisse could produce an accurate portrait in five lines. You have taken two more.

Cheers Ken, strange what goes round in our heads..
And so our lives are briefly summarized and "etched in stone". Beautiful, pondering write in eloquent, classic words and style. We live and we die- "Ay, there's the rub."- or is it?...

I believe so. Thank you Annette
The tale of the headstone told in breathless thoughts as the protagonist treads the tufted overgrown graveyard and wonders at each epitaph. Succinct and very engagingly effective Gee.
