Ever The Twain

Ever The Twain

A Poem by Devons

This madness

is a site better not to have been

a bonfire of devils that linger unseen - and

don't mess with Mr. In-between

It's the story of a lovely lady

who was bringing up three very lovely girls

the eldest was a beaut’; the youngest, blonde and cute - but

the middle one, all ill-repute and curls.

She's madness

with twitching leg, and blue

unstill, at unrest, like someone I knew - these

foolish things remind me of you.

It's the story of a man named Brady

who was bringing up three young boys of his own

the youngest, the beginner; the eldest, a winner - but

the middle one, all sinner, left alone.

He's madness

reaching out but throwing blows

in defence of all he sows - heaven knows

anything goes.

And woe-betide they ever should meet

She and He, like dogs on heat - inevitably

to burn each other out, never left in doubt

their only moves

                       - to Twist and Shout.

I lived in a Brady Bunch scenario but was odd girl out, which made me either Alice or the dog, so the unsettling quality of some of these lines resounds. The use of the song lyrics is very interesting and effective here. Well constructed. The third stanza is my favorite.

Argh, I typed a whole nice long comment and then my computer deleted it :( Anyhow, I was going to say that I really liked the twist on a well known "family-values" story. If they had been real they probably would have turned out something like this... But I think it has something a little deeper than that. The innocent little happy Brady bunch still has things behind the smiles and cheers. What a foreboding feel this poem has.

Wow. I like what you did here. The familiar Brady Bunch theme with a mad twist. The middle children lost in the shuffle, act out and run wild, perhaps in search of the attention they sorely lack within the confines of family.

"And woe-betide they ever should meet..." indeed.

Excellent...as usual!
