Blaze Of GloryA Poem by DevonsWhy didn’t I see you then? As I see you now I should have been looking But I didn’t know how To see you with the future’s eyes And how I might have missed you By ploughing on I ran you down No more than blood and tissue Framed in mortal bones and beauty Now seen, my Queen of thought, Too late to stop but not to look back In dreams that come to naught Of the night you stood at my crossroads Though I see it now, not then Evermore for me in a blaze of glory But nevermore again.
Did I see you then as I see you now? In your helpless human kindness No, I only see now what I didn’t see then My helpless human blindness As I knocked you aside from Angel to gutter Rushing headlong for country, not Queen Left you rolling in dirt, a monster of hurt For a blind man to see the unseen A sight, when sight’s gifted and eyelids are lifted, I can see to be no longer there And the high price I paid for the journey I made A pound of flesh for a fresh slice of air You now breathe without pain, with the strength of the slain And now I must repay the cost As you do unto me as I did unto thee With the life that you had that I lost On that night of dark light when I stood at a crossroads With you it was I who died then Evermore for thee in your blaze of glory You will never love me again. © 2015 DevonsReviews
