IF SOULS CAN FLY

In an instant
He went from in reach
To potentially unreachable
And my heart broke
Longing for a soul
That has been felt but never seen
A soul that might be drifting away
Without having ever known
But perchance has felt
The love I have for it
Without having ever seen my eyes
Or heard the sound of my heart beating
As his head lay on my softly rising chest
I am moved to tears
By the possibility
Of what could be
If miles are forgotten
And souls can fly
