CHAPTER 5 CONCERNS OF THE ELF MENTORS
Two of the most wise and respected elves starred in awe and anger as they watched a wide and narrow screen upon a rocky wall closed in by small waterfalls on both sides. The taller of the two old elves shook his head is disgust as they watched Nyluss blast away from the flaming forest and out of sight within the screen before it faded to white. "I fear young Nyluss has finally found a reason for the rest of the Mentors to sentence him this time," the shorter elf said, almost in sorrow. The taller elf kept his eyes on the blank white screen as he responded with a whisper. "The sentence will be death, I'm sure of it. Our young apprentice has plenty of potential, but potential does not grant one immunity within these walls of our city." "Should we warn him, give him a chance?" The short elf hung his head before he even heard the answer. "Dydruss, you know interference of any kind on our behalf would cause us to suffer the same fate as Nyluss. No, he is on his own. He will return to the city, and face trial. The Mentors have his short life in their hands now." Dydruss let out a long sigh, thinking of his apprentice. "He does have one way to gain another chance. His mother is Queen of the Elves. She, perhaps, may offer her son sympathy that could extend to the Mentors. Nodding in optimism, Dydruss continued. "He may be foolish, but he is not a fool, Tarnall." Shaking his head in frustration with both his old friend and his young apprentice, Tarnall raised his voice, but only slightly. "Nyluss, as I said before, has much potential, but believe me, Dydruss, he is a fool. Any elf who burns down an entire forest to capture one Soul for the Museum is a fool!" Tarnall stalked away in anger, leaving Dydruss alone with the blank screen and waterfalls. He thought of Nyluss once more, then of the Museum of Souls. Despite his poor decision to burn down a forest to capture a Soul, Dydruss understood why Nyluss, even at his young age, so recklessly rushed towards the unknown to face the Souls. There were only five left, and the capture of all would gain the elves the knowledge they so desperately seeked, and perhaps the answers to the greatest threat to face all of the beings in the universe. "What is the Danger", Dydruss reflected silently to himself, and feeling a cold chill run throughout his body at the very thought of The Danger. © 2009 Michael Jewel Davis |
