I Sleep With An Angel

I Sleep With An Angel

A Poem by Gary McDonald

I sleep with an angel, just to watch her breathe
I sit beside her, just to gaze into her eyes
I can't explain why, I just do.

It's as if the stars realign to shape her face
and early morning light that removes her face, lights her more
my words would seem as lies, to those who have not seen.

If breath were all I had, I would still call her name
a word whose meaning escapes all others
such a name cannot be written, only heard.

Soon there will be a day, when I will wake alone
and stillness will hold the night sky
but I shall always call her name.

this reminds me of a poem i wrote this weekend, called "This Morning." I, too, sleep with an angel. Thanks for another take on something I was trying to articulate myself - though not as eloquantly as you!

This is filled with a depth of loving expression... vivid, longing, tender... The world you've painted is infused with a peaceful stillness, though the heart races in the beauty of this moment... So well done. (Your writing came highly recommended and I can see why here!)

thats a unique and intresting piece. i loved your vocabulary and writing sense in this poem. i especially liked this line 'If breath were all I had, I would still call her name' it's very emotional and in a sense romantic. 10/10.
