A Life's Story

A Life's Story

A Poem by George David Hope
"

Something I came up with waiting to do some cleaning

"
                                                                    A LIFE'S STORY
Never married
Died alone
These are the words
Etched in stone
A sorrowful story
The epitaph does tell
Not a life
Where all ends well
Result of infidelity
During the war
A wife's mistake
Husband can't ignore
No love from parents
Came his way
Just called "B*****d"
Because mother did stray
No hero to look up to
Turned to crime
Far too often
Served his time
As years went on
Full of regret
His life's history
People won't forget
One night he found
He could take no more
Swallowed pills
Fell on the floor
Lay undiscovered
Quite a while
Flies and maggots
In carpets pile
Door knocked down
Remains they found
A putrid stench
In air abound
Neighbours watch
As body bag does leave
Soon to be forgotten
No one will grieve
Funeral held
Nobody came
Born unloved
Died the same

This is so intensely real, it's satisfyingly good! It's been in my reading library a while (I've been sketchy at the cafe this year) so it's probably not meant as a Halloween piece, but it's fitting in that way, too. Sometimes you don't need to make stuff up to find a spooky Halloween theme. Many lives are so dismal, it's many times worse than the made-up storylines! Your words are so bluntly honest, this just hammers it home with steady rhythm & rhyme, like a funeral march (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
