Please Don't Leave

Please Don't Leave

A Poem by George David Hope
"

I came across a post by a vet who remarked how many people left the room when they had to have an animal put to sleep and how the animal would panic so I came up with this little ditty.

"
                                                                       PLEASE DON'T LEAVE
Please don't leave me all alone
Stand by my side and hold me tight
You at least owe me that
Before I head into the light
Don't leave me with strangers
Don't turn your back on me
Lets gaze into each others eyes
Till I no longer see
I know it is hard for you
To watch me slip away
But it's ten times worse for me
Knowing I cannot stay
I've been a loyal and faithful friend
Offered unconditional love
Please help me start my journey
To my home awaiting up above
Please hold my paw and stroke my fur
Let me know we are together
Till I'm flying with the angels
My soul light as a feather
I know it will be time soon
My heart beating rapid in my chest
Our time together growing short
Till I am soon at rest
Don't leave me scared and shaking
Not knowing where you are
Let me know I'm still in your heart
So mine won't wear a scar
So please don't leave the room
Help me face my end head on
Be my pal just one more time
Till I am dead and gone

We have had two cats euthanized. The first I stayed with till the end. His parting gift a scratch which drew blood and stung like hell. We'd had him for nearly 17 years. I sort of looked on that as his disapproval. Next time, I wouldn't stay. We have them both buried in the back garden. Both partings were very upsetting. You write very well of the reasons to stay with your pet. I say, do it if you can. A poignant poem which reminded me of our family cats. We have just acquired a kitten. She's adorable and seven weeks. Good to read you George.

Oh my. That's a lot of pets. You must have lived there along time.:)

Thought as much. We have lived in our home since 1982, that's long enough.

No one should ever die alone unless they have to. This is a good work, I'm happy someone articulated in writing something so sad.
