A Strange Request

A Strange Request

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                      A STRANGE REQUEST
I was walking down the garden path
When I heard a little voice
Obviously I stopped and looked around
I felt I had no choice
But I couldn't see where it came from
Or from whom it might have come
But I was determined to find it's source
It really did sound glum
So I looked at nearby houses
But all the windows they were bare
I scanned all the tree tops
But there was nobody there
Then the voice spoke again
A tiny squeaky sound
It made me bend my neck
And look down at the ground
And there right before me
Was a wriggly little worm
He was looking all upset
As on his belly he did squirm
"You couldn't be a darling
As I've got a little itch
But I cannot seem to reach it
No matter how I twitch
I haven't got any arms
Nothing that I can use to help me scratch
But I'm sure if you would help me
This itch would meet it's match"
So on my knees I did get
Till I was on my belly
I gave his back a little rub
He felt like a string of jelly
He sighed once, then sighed again
And a smile began to appear
I'd never seen a grinning worm
It really did look queer
"Further up, now lower down
That's it you've found the spot"
After about a minute
I knew the itch I'd got
Thanks a lot said the tiny worm
"You've really saved the day
I don't mean to be so rude
But I really must be on my way"
I got back up and watched him leave
Not sure of  what I'd just done
But I was sure he was now a happy worm
Off to have some fun
