Trick Or TreatA Poem by George David Hope
TRICK OR TREAT
Halloween was all but over The sweets were nearly gone All the lantern flames extingusihed For another year it was done From the living room doorway Came a little boy No smile upon his face No signs of any joy Shy he said "Trick or treat" "Who are you?" I dared to ask The scars upon his face To real to be a mask When I saw his poor face I very nearly cried I asked "Where's your mummy?" He said "My mummy died" "Well what about your daddy He might be missing you" He slowly lowered his head And said "My daddy is dead too" "Well what about your grandma Is there some one I can call?" He said "You don't understand When I say dead I mean them all" He held out his paper bag To reveal no sweets, not one I offered him what I had left Till all my sweets were gone He took a seat upon a chair And I asked him "Where do you live?" A very puzzled expression Was all that he could give "I'm already home I live underneath your stairs" A shiver ran down my back Up went all my hairs "But please do not be frightened From me you'll hear not a peep You see I only come out at night When you are fast asleep" I couldn't help but notice He was dressed only in rags They were from a different age No sign of designer tags I offered him something to eat And also a little drink When was the last time he'd eaten Was all that I could think We sat and talked all through the night Till the dawn it did appear But then he just stood up And started to disappear "Well it's been nice chatting You've been a lovely host I'm sorry I must be going now You see I am a ghost So thank you for your time I've found it really dandy Perhaps we can do it same time next year Please save me a little candy
