Memories From A Clifftop

Memories From A Clifftop

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                   MEMORIES FROM A CLIFF TOP
As I sit on the cliff top seat
And look right out to sea
I couldn't be more content
There's no other place for me
I watch the terns and kittiwakes
Nesting on the ledge
Sitting there all amazed
Why they don't fall right off the edge
I see children with their parents
Walking hand in hand
I go back to when I was younger
making castles in the sand
I see folks eating ice creams
And fluffy candy floss
People with coloured beach balls
Playing catch and toss
Swimmers braving the icy waves
Life guards on alert
Watching out for dangers
So people don't get hurt
But suddenly I'm on a different beach
The date the 6th of June
Running on some foreign shore
Lit up by the moon
Firing all guns blazing
Bullets fly over my head
Hearing the cries of wounded soliders
Ignoring my buddies who lie dead
Feeling my heart beating
Pounding in my chest
Thinking about far away graves
Where my colleagues now do rest
Do the people playing down below
Think of the sacrifice
Of those who died so long ago
Or do they not think twice
The beach on which they play
Every grain of sand
Is all because of heroes
Who died on a foreign land

Sounds like a memory of the Normandy invasion. The contrast between the peaceful scenes of the present and the warlike images of the past is most effective. Only one who has been in war can truly appreciate peace. Well done. However, do a spell check on the last word of the next to last line.

Great contrast here between the lovely peaceful scenes of children at play, beach balls, ice-creams and candy floss to the Normandy invasion where the allies got a first foothold in occupied Europe.A great deal of sacrifice made by our young men to prevent the onward march of Hitler, who could so easily have found his way across the English channel. Such sorrow the loss of life, all so that we retained our freedom. Your mam was right to insist you posted this poem. I for one am ever grateful. Nice work.
