One Way Ticket

One Way Ticket

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                             ONE WAY TICKET
Train to take us some where far
Because we wear a yellow star
Into carriages we all must fit
All must stand, no room to sit
Slows in the station to a halt
No one's to blame, it's all our fault
Air and light come streaming in
As doors all opened with such a din
Germans shouting "All get out"
Children unaware what it's all about
Guards stand watching in a tower
It's plain to see who welds the power
Dogs all barking, some try to bite
Handlers laughing at peoples fright
Families separated into rows
Leave your belongings, take off your clothes
We all undress till flesh is clear
While guards all watch, point and leer
Heads all shaved, faces bare
The world is blind it doesn't care
"You all must wash till you are clean
Refresh yourselves, see we're not so mean"
Down a path we start to trek
Heads all bowed on defeated neck
Into a room we start to file
Awaiting death without a smile
People weep, hold each other close
All awaiting the fatal dose
Crystals poured into the roof
Ovens awaiting to hide the truth
People scream in urgent plight
Darkness comes to replace the light

A brave topic to write about and you do it well. We must never forget what happened, and for those who try to pretend it didn't happen at all, I say shame on you.

Thanks for your kind words. I came up with this for a competition about darkness as it was at Hallow.. read more
