One Night With Mummy

One Night With Mummy

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                        ONE NIGHT WITH MUMMY
A little girl lost her mummy
She died the second she was born
So all through her short life
Her heart it was so torn
She used to pray to the angels
On her knees down by her bed
Just one day with her mummy
Used to fill her head
One night an angel was passing
And heard this young girls plea's
So she went to see the man upstairs
Eager to see if she could please
The angel quaked as she waited
To see the big man in his seat
She told him about the little girl
And her mummy she'd like to meet
God checked his big red book
And saw she'd got a rotten deal
For one night her prayers could come true
Her broken heart he'd heal
The next night while she was sleeping
Her mother walked into her room
And gently held her little hand
Lit up by the moon
The little girl she felt it
And slowly opened up her eyes
She recognised her from a photo
But stifled her happy cries
"Hi my little Princess
Sorry if you got a fright
An angel heard your lonely prayers
So we've been granted just one night"
She gently took her from her bed
And said "Just come with me
I cannot tell you where we'll go
You'll just have to wait and see"
They glided through fluffy clouds
Towards some lights so far away
"You're going to a special place
Where angels go to play"
They landed by a fairground
The biggest one she'd ever see
"We have this all to ourselves
You'll be treated like a Queen"
A smiling angel let them in
There were rides a far as she could see
And to make it extra special
Every one of them was free
All night long they rode the rides
Bumper cars and hook a duck
Spending some time with her mother
She couldn't believe her luck
They had candy floss and toffee apples
And ice cream by the score
They ate and ate till they felt sick
And couldn't eat no more
They went to a side show
Where you knock down all the cans
But she left one standing
So her mummy clapped her hands
A big gust of wind appeared
That didn't make a sound
It gave the can a mighty push
It landed on the ground
An angels came up and said
"Now you can pick a prize"
The little girl scanned the racks
And couldn't believe her eyes
There were pictures of her mummy
In gold and silver frames
It was the best thing she'd ever won
Because she'd never played these games
But then mummy turned to her
And said "It's time to go
The sun is coming up
I wish time had gone more slow"
Suddenly she was in her bed
With mummy by her side
"I really must be going now"
She opened her arms so wide
The hug seemed to last forever
She squeezed her oh so tight
She gently kissed her daughter
And then wished her a goodnight
She left her dreaming of her mummy
Her image in her head
And standing on her dresser
Was the picture by her bed
