The Raggy Cat

The Raggy Cat

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                          THE RAGGY CAT
All his fur is matted
And his bodies skin and bone
Surviving day by day
Unwanted and alone
Sleeping in an old greenhouse
Access by broken pane
Eating birds and mice that he's caught
Or scraps found in a lane
He used to live with an old lady
But then the old lady died
Her family didn't want him
So he was cast aside
He still stinks about his mistress
He was her little boy
She sit and stroke him for hours
And throw his cat nip toy
He used to sleep on her bed
At the bottom by her feet
When she'd come home from shopping
She always brought a fishy treat
Every night a tin of tuna
Or a packet of fresh crab sticks
Was his supper every night
Finished off with lips then licked
From high up in a tree canopy
Watching the black cars now leave her place
The saddest expression on show that day
Was on on his kitty's face
Out in all bad weather
Snow, rain and wind
No one spares a thought for him
How could they be unkind
It's been so long since he's gave a purr
Or rubbed on someones leg
To strangers he makes a pitiful sound
All he can do now is to beg
He'd love to be a pet again
A sleep on some ones knee
All curled up by a fire
is where he longs to be
