It Hurts That You Left Me

It Hurts That You Left Me

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                IT HURTS THAT YOU LEFT
It still hurts that you left me
To bring a baby up alone
I remember our last embrace
The next minute my mind was blown
You'd really be so proud of her
She's coming on a treat
She's started to take her first steps
With her tiny baby feet
People say she's got your eyes
I can see so much of you in her
Why you had to leave us
It really isn't fair
She's such a little chatterbox
Thought I really don't understand
She's cast a spell upon my heart
Without a magic wand
She has the softest baby hair
Blonde curl on a tiny head
She really loves the stories
When it's time for bed
I tell her all about you
Every minute of the day
And how you'd be so proud of her
If god had let you stay
As for me I'm doing fine
And I think I've met someone new
I met her at toddler classes
She's a single parent too
Oh we haven't started dating
It's still in early days
She helped me through your passing
When my mind was in a haze
Everyone still misses you
Talking about what should have been
Our daughter would have been our Princess
And'd have been my Queen
I'm going to get some water now
For the flowers in your vase
You know I'll always miss you
Time will never heal the scars
I really must be going now
I know I must be brave
I'll be back same time next week
With fresh flowers for your grave

Lovely tribute. Thanks for sharing the pain. The charm of this work lies in its casual imagery and simple parsing without a rigid rhyme to spoil the tearful mood. Your clarity and maturity remind us what it takes to deal with such a loss. We all must say goodbye sometimes to those gone on before. Our loneliness never ends, but the years gloss over the pain and give us pause to be thankful that we are better off for having known them. There is no balm for a broken heart, and still we find solace in rising to the challenge, the duty to carry on alone. I found strength in communing at my church.
