A Man's Best FriendA Poem by George David Hope
A MAN'S BEST FRIEND
An old man in the waiting room His best pal down by his feet Wishing he could turn the clock back And again life would be sweet Walks out in the country Chasing balls and chewing sticks Sitting watching him eating Rewarded for doggy tricks But now his time is nearly up His back legs are old and frail He doesn't want to see the day When behind him they will trail He's been his pal for umpteen yaers Now it's time for him to go His head is saying one last goodbye But his heart is saying no A door opens, his name is called But his legs refuse to move Ho doesn't want to go inside But what exactly would it prove Finally he goes inside The vet helps lift him up He wishes he could turn the clock back To when his best pal was just a pup The vet gets things ready From the corner of his eyes the dog does peep Knowing he's not going home Soon he'll be fast asleep He looks at the old man With a stare that says it's time We've had a blast together it's really been sublime The vet gives him a moment Waiting for the man to give a nod Signal made and needle in He meets his doggy god Slowly his eyes finally close He looks so peaceful and mild He's always been a strong man But now he's crying like a child
