I Picked You Up And Carried You

I Picked You Up And Carried You

A Poem by George David Hope

I PICKED YOU UP AND CARRIED YOU
From the moment you were born
Even though I had no clue
I picked you up and carried you
That's what fathers do
Through tired legs when you were small
You said you could walk no more
I picked you up and carried you
Removed you from the floor
Scraped knees and wounds from all of life's mishaps
Putting dressings on your cuts
I picked you up and carried you
Without no ifs or buts
When you were down and so low
Left with a broken heart
I picked you up and carried you
Like I had right from the start
On the happiest day in your life
When he left you in the lurch
I picked you up and carried you
Weeping in the church
Unexpected trip to hospitial
When the baby wasn't there
I picked you up and carried you
Life it really wasn't fair
The day the doctors found a lump
And promised to do their best
I picked you up and carried you
With that cancer in your chest
As you grew weak and very sick
I was strong for my little girl
I picked you up and carried you
Though my head was in a whirl
Now wooden box upon my shoulder
No more pain and no more strife
I'll pick you up and carry you
For the last time in my life
