Sea of DespairA Poem by GailAlexanderIn this poem I describe an imaginary experience on the lunar surface of the moon. Again I contrast the benign with the sinister.
I wandered the desolate, cold, airless landscape of the moon. I climbed unclimbable mountains, and I descended the deepest craters. I leaped from her rocky surface to almost touch the Milky Way. Earth shone across the solar system like a brilliant turquoise jewel. I was bewitched by her Majesty the Moon, and I walked in a dream to the Sea of Despair, mindless of all dangers--a lunatic. I slowly waded into the aquaeous shallows along the shore. Shall I go all the way? Shall I...?
