A Little Life

A Little Life

A Poem by Gaia Octavia

I have lived a thousand lives
and felt each death as sharp as knives,
circled the globe 'round and 'round,
wept oceans into which I've drowned
been haunted deep within my head
by whispered words from friends' deathbeds,
and when I could not say adieu,
I'd dig them up to live anew

Although it isn't quite the same,
it brings me comfort without shame
to breathe life back into my friends,
ensuring they will never end;
a miracle in my two hands,
no matter what death may demand

I always listen to their stories,
celebrate their many glories,
and though some knock this life I lead,
I'm always quick to disagree;
for I live lives in endless lands
whose borders fit between my hands

Great poem with well-crafted rhyme & rhythm! I love the way the beginning starts out a little philosophical, like you’re setting up the groundwork for this message – very imaginative start! I have always been one to encourage people to STOP trying to “get over it” when people die or they leave our lives. Even if the firsthand pleasures are gone, there’s no reason we shouldn’t recycle all the old pleasures (as long as we can truly enjoy it & not mourn too much over it) – which is exactly what your poem is saying & I agree! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Nicely constructed rhymes and phrasing woven into this well articulated celebration of the value of friendships, that even when ended still harvest grain.

I loved the above lines. With age, the world seem to become smaller. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

Thank you very much 🙂
dear Gaia... I have found that the most treasured gifts from my friends and loved ones that I can hold in my hands is the part that fills my heart and remains a part of me.... their way of understanding and forgiving. truly, Pat

Thank you 😊 That is indeed a treasure.
That's a cracking poem, it really is. "Wept oceans into which I've drowned"...what a great line. And the last two..."for I live lives in endless lands whose borders fit between my hands." ...love those too. Great stuff.

This is a well-crafted, well thought-out poem. Very profound with spectacular imagery. That triad of a third stanza sounds far better as an ending. The musicality of the entire piece flows in such a way to vouch for that. All in all, well done!

no need.....it makes sense.....but more as the ending, not a bride.

It always did bug me but I hadn't visited this in quite some time
This was wonderful. I read a couple of times, not because I needed to but because I wanted to.

This is....utterly beautiful. When I first read it, it leads to an almost supernatural image appearing, but then it becomes clearer that these worlds and lives you hold in your hand are from the best movie theatre imaginable, the mind through other peoples work. just like my first assumption, the final image is rarely what we thought it would be.
Beautifully captured words.
