'MericaA Poem by Gaia Octavia
To those who say that racism
only lies in the past, I see you all hiding behind your faulty blade of grass So why all the frustration? 'cause many don't understand, so let's back this truck up and reach a helping hand Now imagine after years of working hard for all your family, others turning around to crush and ground those dreams that set you "free" Because in America, if you have brown skin, it gives us all the right to call you an alien We do it so you know we don't think you belong and I'm embarrassed and furious at myself for being blind for so long You see, inequality, it definitely thrives and survives 'cause my white death is still worth more than any black one alive The problem isn't with the people saying their lives matter too, it's ignorance and those in power yelling hate-filled rhetoric at you Hatred needs no introduction no orange spokesman to appoint and even after all of this there'll be people missing the point But what is never okay is to deflect all this hate onto any group of people in or out of these divided states And yes, police aren't perfect because they're you and they're me but they deserve to live long lives with all their own families We all need to recognize these serious problems exist and with peace and love and change make sure hate and ignorance don't persist But no matter what we do we better get this right 'cause this ain't the land of the free and the home of the whites © 2016 Gaia OctaviaAuthor's Note
