A Poem by Gabrielle Linch

Eyes weaken as the night prolongs,
The mind shifts to a million thoughts.
This state is not where I belong.
Instead I am counting tied knots,
To find peace in a sleepless dream.
Not even lullabies can cure
Insomnia at it's worst scheme,
That is something I must endure.

The title had me expecting the worn out cliche' of 'hurt and paranoid female pondering lost or broken love"- and I was surprised to find myself relating to the condition of it's subject. I like John Gabriel's description: Crisp. This takes us out of free verse and into a structure that fills its potential, seem quite focused against the more abstract style of our day. Fight the river!
