Unfinished

Unfinished

A Story by Gabriel Soberanis

As he watches the ice of his glass melt, he keeps wondering what happened; at first, a little fortunate encounter, full of tension and unanswered greetings.

Similar feelings, very distant paths; Common concerns, very different ambitions.

Ask for another drink, and he loses while looking at the golden color of the liquor. Remembered the next time he looked at her; a silly question that broke the anger, that broke the tension, provoked a smile, perhaps the saddest thing to would be happen.

He can hear how the intoxicating fluid goes through his throat, and that’s when he revive what happened next. Days and weeks of lies and laughter, of small confessions and shared ideas; of distant friendship, and never closeness.

Close his eyes while taking another drink; Tense calm, good moments, spontaneous joy and periodic rejections. He understand, it’s time to leave.

Ask for the bill and leave the bar; Hallucinates with a fortuitous reunion, wants to end that unfinished business, wants to understand if something was real, if anything else could happen.

Tomorrow when he come back and start drinking, he’ll remember her again, and find an answer that won’t exist.
