The Millennial Depression

The Millennial Depression

A Poem by Gabby The GAB
"

A piece to be spoken orally in class.

"

I am here Speaking on behalf of the Millennials that had been oppressed
because from what I believed in, depression is a serious matter
and I am also here to encourage you all not to give up on life
I know there are just so many things you would like to express
So many things we are so obsessed but I am not here to confess
We tend to do things easily without thinking the practicality of things
Even though it means nothing for some, we are still trying our best
There are so many things to learn, so many things to ingest
So many expectations we want to impress
People want us to do this and that,  do we even need rest?
You might pass or you might fail but let me remind you this is not a contest
Everyone wants to pass the test but everything is a test!
Almost everyone is protesting to things they have yet to do and it’s a mess
Things like this and things like that, I hope you don’t think like that
The Depression we are talking is no monkey business
If you think that you are overstressed and at the same time very depressed
then suppressed it however you can
Do what you have to do and If you think it’s the best for you then do it
Don’t give up and do not settle for less because change is a progress
Do it not for him, not for her, not for them, Do it for yourself
Just always remember that there is always room for improvement
Everything is a blessing and you are already very blessed
Thank thee for all of it all, for He the one guiding you all along, headstrong!

Bow*

Overall, your message is a well-stated pep talk to those feeling depression . . . but to me, this does not seem like the medical definition of depression . . . it seems more like you are defining this word differently, as possibly the unique malaise that has struck a generation. I feel you are authentic in talking to this generation, much more than I could be, as an older person. The only thing that could be pumped up are the vanilla phrases like: "so many things to learn, so many things to ingest" -- such generalities do not bring to mind how these lives are . . . you need to use fresh sparkling DETAILS to paint word pictures. Also: "people want us to do this and that" -- again, too general to help us SEE and FEEL and KNOW and HEAR and SMELL what this feels like. Generalities are boring. I want to see you pump things up by using bright vivid details that appeal to all the senses. PUT ME INTO THE SHOES OF THIS PERSON to show me how this life feels. I think you are strong in word-crafting with rhythm & rhyme, lyrical phrasing, honest evaluations about life . . . but it could be pumped up if get specific. (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
