For Those Who Can No Longer FeelA Poem by Gabby Nieves
Did you happen to feel the wind leaving your lungs
As you exhaled your very last breath? The moments you let pass by And the people who slipped away Did you feel all you could, Or anything at all? When the earth consumed your soul Did it consume your regret too? The sadness you tucked away Underneath your fake smile and monotonous life All for what? As the leaves now wisp past your gravestone And the flowers begin to wilt Do you remember your flesh? Every ounce of life you took for granted Sitting, starring into your coffee When you should have been telling her how you felt Does your office job settle into your bones And make you wish you could feel again? The seasons change, Change, And change again Right before our eyes, But how many of us actually see it? The taste of pumpkin, Peppermint, And Ice Pops dripping down your chin The freedom of the open road How sad to have lived so dead For those who can no longer feel Would you do it all again, Except backwards? With the sound of running footsteps beating above, One could only hope To catch a glimpse of light, Or a grain of dirt To feel, When you can no longer feel
