Rum & Coke

Rum & Coke

A Poem by Gabby Nieves

It's 2 A.M. and I'm having a drink in your honor
It burns down my throat
And into my chest
I remember when we used to stay up all night
Talking about everything, yet nothing at all
I'm drunk now and reading our old texts
I never meant for us to die
But when you left the wind turned to ice
And I found myself cold and alone
I'm not sure when we started competing
But I'm entirely certain you've won

Its hard to let go of the past until the future comes around the corner. no matter how well you seem to move on, you never truely do. Often you find yourself thinking dark thiings about everything. Sneering at others who have what you lost, albeit with different people. Asking all the what ifs over and over till you slowly start driving youself insane. And all the while all you can think was, was it my fault? Was it because of me? Why was I such a fool? The people pulled out of that place are the lucky ones, the ones that don't... Well its true what they say. Depression kills.

Well written. THe emotions and feelings are easily expressed. Thank you for sharing.

Its simply because we've all been there, or at least most people I know have.

Oh I can adhere to this feeling any day not with another person as I met my relevant other so long ago while we were young that I can't remember my previous failings. But the desire to be self - indulgent and ponder with a good drink has to be one of my favorites, funily enough I was about to comment on how sometimes the situations will offer a different view but there was no need as you certainly share you point of view and let me know that it is your opinion that he has won.

Cheers to that then

Thankyou

haha cheers! And thank you for your review. I'm happy you've met your one, just had to say that.
A very articulate although dark depiction of emptiness and loss. Well done, and thanks to Jack for the RR. He knows my taste in poetry for sure!

You are very welcome.
We've all been through losing someone who used to be special. I sure have, so many times that it's just gotten old. "Easy come, easy go" is what I've really been finding to be true lately.
The good news is that there are always other special people to find. The bad news, I guess, is that one day it'll probably come to an end with them, too. Life's a merry-go-round.
Personally, I tend to delete those old texts, though. No need to have a cluttered-up phone.
