Forgotten

Forgotten

When the shark attacked I didn't forget to scream

I just kept calm, though it wasn't as easy as it seemed.

They hauled me into shore and I was rushed to the ER

that day was the closest I had ever come to death by far.

I didn't know how I could surf again without my other arm

losing my arm to that shark, I think it did my mother more harm.

My dad encouraged me and kept telling me not to let it get to me,

my brothers always told me to stick it in there and just wait to see.

I wanted to go to the Regionals Surfing Competition so badly it hurt,

it was awkward when I had to ask my mom for help to put on my shirt.

The days went by and I learned that I couldn't possible do it alone

I tried to hide my fear but soon enough my cover was blown.

Dad helped me get back into the water with full fledged confidence,

I could not have done it all with my amazing, supportive family's absense.

They helped me find my true self hidden within those waves in North Shore,

I'm glad the other surfers didn't go easy on me cause that helped for sure.

I may have only won 5th place in the Finals when the countdown ended,

and even though my final gnarly wave may not have completely counted..

It counted in my eyes, and the interviewers ask if my loss is at all a burden,

I tell 'em, "That fateful day I surfed the North Shore will never be forgotten."

I just saw Soul Surfer this afternoon and it inspired this/me...scratch that....Bethany Hamilton isnpired this/me(: ....enjoy :)
I surf too, and this girl is an amazing inspiration. Bethany Hamilton, I dedicate this to you (though i know you'll never see it :/ )...you're strength and ability to never give up when the going got tough......you just kept on going...and what a difference it made. I hope all that fan mail did you some good to realise you aren't alone.
And for those of you reading this, you aren't alone either. Many people suffer a great deal of losses and there are plenty of other people out in the world we live in who have it way worse than us. So keep your chins high and don't let anyone stop you from doing what you love most. Believe in yourself, and you can acheive anything!

I've never seen the movie, but I think you did a great job of summarizing/describing it. The last two lines of the first stanza captured my attention with their perfect rhyming.
