Chapter 3: Spring Flowers; and Man's Power

It was a wet spring this year. The birds were flying everywhere and the clouds were just drifting on by across the grey sky. It smelt like wet grass and fresh flowers. The grass felt good between my toes. This spring was very lackluster. Nothing happened I guess you could call it the season of monotonous…that seemed to be the right word for it.
Today I was going to see Baoth and his boyfriend Cathal. We were going to teach me about Wilhelm I; our Emperor in Germany. They’ve taught me so much! They even told me about Otto von Bismarck! They taught me mostly everything; and anything about the government. When I was older I was going to be in the government and make it so that every kid has a health home. I met up with Baoth and Cathal in the empty library were the adults would have their Bible study. I sat down on a hard wood chair. Cathal sat down next to me with his big cheesy smile.
‘You excited Jack?’ Cathal asked.
I nodded repeatedly. ‘Oh yes! I love the government stuff!’
Baoth sat down with a smile. ‘Well that’s good. We’re not suppose to tell younger kids about this stuff; but I wouldn’t consider you a kid. You have a brain of a twenty year old!’ He opened the book and blew dust off of it. He cleared his throat.
‘Let’s see.’ He skimmed his finger across a page. ‘Oh yes! January 18th 1871, Wilhelm I became the Emperor of Germany. That was During the Franco-Prussian War of course. Which didn’t even last that long.’ He looked up at me.
‘Do you know who where the main people who fought in the Franco-Prussian War Jack?’
I rubbed my chin for a couple seconds. I looked around and looked at Cathal. He was lipping out ‘France and Prussia!’
   I laughed. ‘France and Prussia?’
Baoth looked over at Cathal. ‘Yes Cathal that is correct! Now I have a question for “Jack”!’
I smiled. ‘Okay!’
‘Okay Jack…Which country did we back up?’ Baoth asked.
‘Hum well duh! We totally backed up France!’ I said confidently.
Baoth laughed. ‘Well not exactly. We helped Prussia. I know it’s not much to learn but me and Cathal need to go shovel the mud out so the ladies can plant veggies!’ He rubbed my head.
‘I’ll teach stuff later okay?’ He said leaned against the door.
‘Okay I guess so?’ I said titling my head. ‘I have to go anyways; so I will come over later! Bye!’
Baoth and Cathal walked off waving their hands. I watched them walk away. When they were out of my sight I picked up the book. I just brushed my fingers against the words. It was in English. They had weird looking words. I couldn’t read German; now that I think about it the only thing I knew how to read were music notes! I shrugged as I got up. I saw another person’s shadow behind me. The chills crawled up my spine. I quickly turned around and there was Kerstien. She had her hands on her hips. She smiled.

‘What you doing in here?’ she looked down at my hands. She saw that I was holding a book. She quickly looked up at my face. ‘You read?’ she got a big smile and sat down. ‘Read to me!’
 I looked around. ‘Well I don’t really…read.’ I said quietly.
She squinted one eye closed. ‘Well them why in the f****n’ world you have a book? I mean there are not even any pictures in it.’ She held it up. She threw it. ‘Boring!’ I ran over to it and picked it up. ‘Be gentle! It could break or something! Then we both would be in some deep s**t.’
She grabbed my wrist and pulled me into her. ‘Hey Jack? You wanna go have some real fun?’
 My face turned red. ‘Well…no.’
She smiled and started to drag me. ‘Common party pooper! Let’s go hang out!’
‘Wouldn’t Bucth get mad?’ I asked nervously.
She turned around to look at me. ‘Yeah. That’s why it’s fun. Ha-ha! He won’t even know! So it’s okay! Besides…’ she got close to my face. ‘I have an alibi…’ she winked.
I took her to an open field because no one would find us and it’s relaxing. She threw herself down onto the grass and put her hands behind her head. ‘Awe this is nice.’ She let out a belch.
I laughed as while I got down next to her. ‘Yeah this is the place I go to get away.’ I looked over at her.
‘Tell me about yourself? I am almost positive I’m not the only kid here with an interesting story...’
She rubbed her chin. ‘Well I am Kerstien Zenith Murphy.’
I looked at her. ‘Zenith?’
She laughed. ‘Yeah I know pretty bad hu? My dad gave me that name because my mom died when she had me. Zenith means directly above heaven. So I guess she is always with me.’
I smiled. ‘It’s pretty and has a good meaning. Tell me more!’
She shrugged. ‘Let’s see; when my mom died my dad re-married to this b***h. Oh and my dads name is    Severin and Her name was Oriana. She gave my dad four kids and then she kicked the bucket. People say it was a murder!’ she waved her hands in the air to give it a suspicious mood.
‘Ha-ha yeah. Well I have four brothers. Avalon, Welkin, Chroma, and Xavier. When they were born I was six. My dad got sent to jail for beating some chick at a bar; and here I am!’ she threw her hands in the air jokily.

I rubbed my chin. ‘What about your brothers?’
She looked up at the sky. ‘Well we all got sent to an Orphanage but it got too full. So they sent me here saying “Well get you back once rooms are open!” but it’s been years; so I call bull s**t.’
I looked at her hands that were still in the air. She was waving them around.
‘Oh I am sorry…’ I said.
She looked at me. ‘No! If it’s anyone’s fault’s my dads! He’s a good guy; he just makes bad choices. Pretty much like everyone else on this Earth. People will never be perfect I suppose.’ She looked over at me.
‘Well that’s about me! What about you?’
‘Me? Well what do you want to know?’ I said pointing at myself tensely.
‘I wanna know about your mom and dad; if you have brothers or sisters! Why you are here! You know simple stuff.’
‘Okay. Well I am Jackferd Wendle Author Luther Adams III; but just call me Jack.’ I pause and looked at her face. She had a confused face.
‘Oh wow! That’s a mouth full! Ha-ha! Continue?!’ she said giggling.
My face turned red. ‘Okay. My mother’s name is Elizabeth Adams. She lived in Chicago her whole life. She was in Broadway.’
Kerstien looked at me. ‘I would tell you bull s**t; but I think I’ve herd about her… Doesn’t Mr. Schenck have some of her music?’
I nodded. ‘Yeah we’ve talked about that already. I pretty much told him that she’s a b***h.’
She laughed. ‘She looks like it! What about your old man?’
I lightly smiled. ‘My father was my best friend. He was a scientist. He studied Biology.’
‘He was?’ she asked.
‘Yeah he was. He also studied magic and he preformed magic shows and what not. He drowned in a water tank stunt. He died right in front of his whole family.’
‘Holy s**t.’ Kerstien said bluntly.
‘Yeah…’ I laughed as if I was agreeing. ‘I have a brother his name is Alan; and my sister’s name is Alice. Alan is ten years older than me. Alice is fourteen years older than me. When father died she had already moved out. You see my mother and father were “separated” cause she had a big cocaine and alcohol problem. Alan just stayed with mother; but I left with my father. So once he died I moved into my mother’s place and for some reason she gave me up. So here I am?!’

‘Jezz Jack? You have some problems ha-ha?’ she said jokily.
‘Not yet. I am sure it will settle in!’ I laughed.
‘How did you meet Baoth, Cathal, Spooky and Dolly?’ I asked her.
She looked over at me. ‘Well I guess how you meet other people. I had a bed next to Dolly and she just introduced me to them… They are good people. Hey Jack?’ she asked.
‘Yeah what is it?’ I glanced over at her with the corner of my eye.
‘Do you have any good friends here?’ she sat up from the wet grass and looked down at me.
‘Well not really. I’ve never been a good people person. I’m just to shy.’ I looked at my thumbs.
‘Why you shy? There’s nothing wrong with you?’
‘Yeah I know. People just scare me; I am just nervous that they are gonna hurt me; or just look down at me.’
‘I don’t look down at you.’ She grabbed my hands. ‘And I will never hurt you.’ She smiled at me.
‘Thanks Kerstien…’ I said nervously. I couldn’t look at her eyes. It made my stomach hurt too much.
‘How come it hurts my belly when I see you?’ I asked her.
‘Hurt? Eh I have no idea…? Maybe you’re just hungry or something?’ she suggested.
‘Well I thought about that too; but when I look just at you it makes me feel all…’
‘Oh! I know what you’re talking about.’ She covered her face to hide the blushing.
‘You do? What is it?’
‘Well you like me or something?’ she asked between her fingers.
‘Yeah you’re cool? Why?’ I rubbed my head. ‘Why is she hiding her face?’ I thought to myself…
‘No Jack. When you have a “crush” on someone you get tingling in your stomach with is sometimes called “Butterflies”. That’s what you’re experiencing. Didn’t anyone ever tell you that?’ she looked up at me.
‘Nu-uh; no one told me anything?!’ I looked away from her.
‘I wish I could like you more; but I don’t want girl germs!’
She started to laugh. ‘Oh Jack! I didn’t know you like boys!’ she smacked her knee. ‘I am joking! Ha-ha!’
I gave her a weird look. ‘Ew I would never like a dude! Don’t go there! Ha-ha!’
‘So Jack do you like me or what?’ she stood up and put her hands on her hips. ‘Cause if you do! We could have a secret love life.’ She nudged me a couple times. My face turned bright red.
‘I don’t think so! That is a different form of suicide. Butch would skin me! I am sorry. Besides…You don’t know me that well anyways…’
‘Of course I do! I know everything about you, and you know everything about me. So why not? And like I said Butch doesn’t even have to know. I was gonna dump his sorry a*s anyways.’ She put an arm around me looking at her nails. ‘Please Jackie?’
‘Well I dunno. Let me think about it okay?’ I looked up at her with a kind smile.
She gave me an evil smile back. ‘I know what would make you think faster Jack…’ she looked at me dead in the face.
‘What?’ I looked around.
She grabbed me by my shirt collar and pulled me into her until our noses touched. ‘If you kiss me Jack it’s official.’
She closed her eyes with a silly smile on her red face.
I just stared at her. The way her red hair waved and caressed her freckled face made me feel so safe. I looked down at her puffed out lips, they were light and cute. I sighed. It was going to be my first kiss. I wasn’t prepared but it’s better now than never.
I plumped out my lips and leaned in. It felt all wet and nasty when our lips touched. I tired to pull back but she grabbed me and pulled me in tight. The “butterflies” in my belly were hitting every corner of my body. I felt a shiver up my spine. Goosebumps formed. It was gross in a nice way.
Time felt fast. Two minuets felt like two years. She just gave me sloppy pecks. I was guessing that she’s never kissed someone either. Something just felt right.
When we pulled apart we just stared at each other.
‘That was strange.’ I said flopping out my words. She smiled lightly. ‘Yeah it…was…kinda fun.’ She said staring at my lips. I curled my lips in. ‘I suppose so. It just felt weird.’
She looked away for a second and then swigged her head to me.
‘So are we going steady now?’ she asked with a smile.
‘Well I herd from my father that if you kiss someone you should marry them.’
‘So we are engaged?’ she asked as she tilted her head.
‘I am guessing? Yeah. That’s kind fun to think about!’ I laughed.
‘Okay Sweet! I need to break up with Butch now that I have a husband…’
   I laughed. ‘Yeah!’
‘Well I got to go husband! I will see you later okay?’ she hugged me.
‘Okay!’ I said as I hugged her back. Once again she gave me a kiss; but this time on the cheek.
‘Bye Jack!’ she said waving her hands. I waved back at her. ‘Buh-Bye Kerstien!’

We went our separate ways. I went to my bed made of hay and wood and laid down in it. I giggled all night felling my lips.
Oleg sat up. ‘What are you laughing about?’ he looked over at me.
I sat up and looked at him. ‘Well there is this gi-’
‘A girl? You…Jack?!’ he pulled me in by my shirt collar. ‘Tell me Everythin! No shady area! Tell me what you guys did!’
I laughed and slapped his hands off my shirt. ‘Yeah it’s pretty cool and stuff. You don’t know her.’ I lied to him. He just leaned in. ‘Yeah and what?’
‘Well we kissed the first time today.’ I bragged.
‘Like tongue and s**t?’ he asked. I gave him a weird look.
‘What do you mean? There are ways of kissing? I just thought you did it on the lips and cheek? The tongue? That’s gross.’
Oleg slapped me on the back of the head. ‘Are you stupid or something? Making out? You never herd of it before? It’s when you kiss on the lips and rub your tongues against another.’
‘That’s disgusting!’ I stoke out my tongue and looked at it. ‘It’s all vein’ie and what not! You’re lying!’
‘I am not! It’s hella fun! I am sure if anyone would like it; it would be you.’ He poked me in the nose.
‘Well I will see about that I guess.’
I just rubbed the back of my neck.
Oleg got back in his bed. ‘Now let me sleep f****t! I am so sleepy! You’re gonna get in trouble if you miss more singing classes…’
I nodded my head and place my face into my pillow. When I looked up the sun was out. It didn’t even feel like I slept. I hated those nights. About a minuet later I herd the bell ring. I sighed into my pillow. I sat up rubbing my eye sockets. They were sore.
I think I was snoring last night because I had a terrible pain in the back of o my mouth. I started to rub that too, but nothing made the pain go away. ‘I guess I can lip sing today.’ I thought to myself. It was a good idea. I had to get up and ready since we had singing in about ten minuets. Once again I rubbed my hands into my face, but then I herd a loud scream and a thud behind me. I turned around to see a kid collapsed. A Nun ran in and looked around.
‘What in all that is Holy just happened?’ she asked all of us.
But to be honest none of us knew. She helped him up; he was crying hard. Maybe he just got sick of starving and wanted to cry. I know how that felt. Maybe he didn’t want to go sing and work all day. Maybe he just wanted his parents. But I would never know. He looked very thin and ill by the time a nurse came in. She picked him up and shooed us off. We had places to go anyways. The lucky b*****d didn’t have to do s**t today all because he fell and cried a little. All the boys came in late to singing classes. Mr. Schenck wasn’t happy at all. ‘All you gentlemen are in serious trouble!’
‘Yeah we’ve all herd it before.’ Butch sat down with his friends.
Mr. Schenck glared at him. ‘Well I am almost positive that you haven’t herd this: All of you are going to stay an hour extra! That means no dinner. Nothing!’ he slammed his hand down on some papers. We all glared over at Butch who was looking at his nails. ‘Blah blah blah.’ He said under his breath.
Today sucked. My throat hurt, no dinner, and more singing. I couldn’t imagine it getting any worse.
I did as I planed; I started to lip sing. It was the smartest thing I’ve ever done. There was everyone else singing; so no one could tell that I was lipping out the words. Butch glared at the back of my head and flipped me off. I watched my lips move. Something was so queer about it. First off I wasn’t the best lip singer so I would miss some words; and second of all I would just stop singing when I didn’t know the part.
He leaned in next to me so that I couldn’t see him. He listened. Nothing. He got an evil smile as he raised his hand.
‘Yes Mr. Foreski?’ Mr. Schenck asked Butch as he pointed at him.
‘I think there is something you should know. Someone is cheating.’ He said with a smile.
Mr. Schenck stared at Butch. ‘Who is it then?’ he just rubbed his face into his hand.
‘Jack Adams.’ Butch said. I watched my name craw off his lips. A shiver went up my spine. Mr. Schenck looked at me; then Butch. He scratched his eyebrow. ‘Is that true Jack?’
‘No sir.’ I said quietly.
‘Then Butch,’ he looked over at him. ‘shut’d up.’
Kids started to laugh. It was actually kind of funny. Just a Shut’d up? When Butch herd that his face went red. ‘Yessir.’ He just glared at me. I knew I was dead but it was still funny.
After we left the extra hour of hell we had to go to bed. Well we had to; it really didn’t stop people from doing other stuff. I tried to hide before Butch would find me and kill me; but him being him he found me. I swear he wasn’t human. He could fine me anywhere. He picked me up by my hair. It was just the two of us today, no one else. I thought that was strange, but I didn’t want to question him.
He threw me on the ground by my hair and sat on my stomach just throwing punches at my neck and face. I could feel my nose snap. Something snapped at least. My face went numb and the only thing I could see was the insides of my eyelids. I felt around looking for something that would protect me. It was all grass.

He got off of me and picked me up; but this time by my shoulder blade. He dragged me to the tree.
I could hardly see since my eyes were so swollen, and that the night had approached. The only sense of light was from fireflies. I could taste blood. I nodded my head back and forth to look around. I had no idea where I was. It was most likely the open field. He put his hands on my neck and clinched tight. He got close to my ear. ‘You never make an idiot out of Butch Foreski.’ He said softy in my ear. ‘Do f*****g you understand you p***y?’ he asked me.
He squeezed tighter on my neck. ‘Do you?’
I started to nod; and he frowned. ‘Jack say it…now!’
He let go of my neck and I fell down. I looked at my bloody blistered and almost broken hands. I saw a big rock next to me. I wrapped my hands around it as I grinded my teeth together. ‘Never Butch. You’re a pig!’ I waited for him; I waited for him like a hungry fox waited for a fat chicken to make the wrong move. I herd his feet scuffing over. My face was down but it’s like I could see him. When he touched my back I swung my arm around with the rock and shoved it in his right eye. I pressed it in and pulled it down to his jaw bone. I rolled on top of him and started to pound on his knees and elbows. I could feel the bones shatter right away.
I herd a scream of anguish as he let go of me. He held his eye screaming. I saw some people coming over with a shocked look on their face.
I saw Oleg, Zach, Dewitt and Adalwin following people over. Oleg looked over the crowd and gasped. Their was about fifteen kids around me and Butch; but they weren’t chanting. They were just quite.
I looked over at Butch and he was crying. I thought it was over so I slid down into the mud and took a gasp of air.
I felt someone grab the back of my neck and throw me back down. I didn’t know who it was, but all I herd were people gasping.
I could kick, scream, or crawl but I could bite. I just grabbed the nearest body part that was closest to me and I dug my teeth deep into it. I just clinched deeper and deeper until I herd a pop and then a snap. Whatever I bit into came off and I spit it out of my mouth. I looked down at it. It was a toe.
The big toe. My face turned a weird shade of green and I pushed the body off of me. It was Butch. People stepped away from us and started to run off. I would too since I would not want to be a witness to what just happen. I could get in a s**t load of trouble.
But since I was in the fight I knew I was in deep s**t.  Butch curled up in a ball of screaming pain. I just stood up and stared at his friends.
‘Don’t you dare tell a soul.’ I said to them with a harsh tone. I felt pretty cool actually.
All four of them ran off. Once again it was just me and Butch. I stared down at him.
‘You deserve more, but I’m not like you. I know when to stop hurting someone.
Now you will live with your mistakes.’
I walked off. I actually felt bad, and I bit my lower lip. ‘Well he did get what was coming to him, so maybe I shouldn’t feel bad?’
I shrugged and walked off. Like I said; he got what was coming to him. I didn’t care if I got in trouble. I felt much better now that it was said and done.
I wiped the blood off my mouth and went into the bunker room. All the boys stop talking and stared at me. I crawled into my bed and rolled onto my stomach. I didn’t care anymore. I was just so fed up with Butch and his bull s**t.
‘Oleg…’ I asked him.
He got stiff and looked at me. ‘Yeah Jack?’
‘Do you think what I did was right? And I want your opinion.’
He looked around as he twirled his thumbs around. ‘Well I guess so. I mean he was an a*****e. You’re just a person and you have your own breaking points. I guess?’ he put his sheet over his head. ‘You’re a good kid Jack, no worries. Night.’
‘Good Night Oleg.’ I said as I rolled over to look up at the hole in the ceiling. Once again the stars were waiting for me. Shining all their love upon Earth.
I closed my eyes. What seemed like five minuets I felt someone grab me and I sat up quickly.
There was Mr. Schenck. I was in complete shock. ‘What are you doing here?’ I asked him.
‘We need to have a quick discussion Jackferd Adams.’ He said slowly.
I looked around and everyone was sleeping. I looked up at Mr. Schenck who was staring at me. I thought I was in trouble for what I’ve done to Butch. I gulped.
‘Okay, but it’s just Jack?’ I said.
He smiled. ‘Okay Jack. Follow me.’
He grabbed me by my wrist and he started to drag me out of the bunkers.
‘Is this about Butch?’ I asked as he was pulling on me.
He looked down at me. ‘Butch? What about him?’ he asked.
It felt like a heavy load was lifted off of me. ‘Oh nothing…He was being a jerk today. That’s all.’ I said.
   He rubbed his chin. ‘Alright?’
We arrived to his office. My throat felt very raw.
‘I am sorry if I can’t talk as much as I should.’ I paused for a second. ‘My throat is very sore…’ I said.
Mr. Schenck looked at my. ‘Oh no! I am sorry Jack. I went to medical school so do you want me to take a look?’ he asked.
 I shrugged and then nodded.
‘Okay open up!’ he pull out this small thin piece of wood and held up a flash light as he looked down my throat.
‘Looks like something is going on here… I’d say possibly a sore throat. Nothing to extreme at all; so you’ll be fine in about a week.’ He said.
‘So what was it that you wanted anyways?’ I asked softly.
He looked at me. ‘Oh yes. Two things...’ he paused as he pour himself some wine.
He waved it around a couple times. He watched it mix around. Then smelt it as he looked up at me.
I sat there on a wooden chair.
He continued. ‘Well as you know, I love your mother’s music. I was going to attend her spring concert this coming March; and wanted you to come with me.’
I looked at him nervously. ‘Why would I want to see her?!’ I asked sternly.
‘Well it’s your mother Jackferd? I mean why not? Maybe she has changed these past years in sorrow of her loss.’
I grinded my teeth together. ‘Don’t you get it?’ Mr. Schenck looked at me.
‘Hu? What do I not get Jackferd?’ he asked.
‘People don’t change. There is no reason for second chance. No matter whom it is. No matter what they’ve done. Especially no matter what they say. They will never change for you. People hardly change for themselves. It’s pointless to say she has changed; because it’s obvious that she hasn’t. You might know what my mother’s done; but you’ll never know who she is. Even I, her son doesn’t even completely know who she is... If this was the only reason you woke me up; then I am leaving.’
‘Jackferd. I might not be you. But you cannot say those things about people.’ He grabbed my shoulders and sat me down.
‘Listen to me Jackferd. People hardly change; yes you are right about that. But that doesn’t matter. God still loves them no matter who they are, what they’ve done, and no matter what they say. He still loves them because he is their Father. He cannot change what they’ve done, but he still forgives them. You need to be more Christ like especially with your mother. Thou shall respect thy mother and father. Please just try to let go. Forgive, and forget; so you can live for today.’
I got up and pushed my chair away from him. ‘If you forgive and forget it will reassure that the past will repeat it self again. I’m not stupid just because I am a kid. I would respect my mother and my father but they are dead. My father passed away and my mother is dead to me. God is full of s**t.’ I rubbed my neck.
‘You have to rights to your own opinions. Just be careful who you say those things to. Luckily I am not a super strong Catholic. You could be whip if you say that to other staff members. Now since that offer I gave you is a no, you wanna hear what else I have to say?’
I just stood up and crossed my hands. ‘Yeah. What do you want?’ I asked.
He smiled. ‘Like I said I am not a very good Catholic man.’
I looked at him strangely. ‘Okay?’
‘Why don’t you sit down Jackferd and let me get you some soothing tea for your throat.’
He had a warm kettle filled with boiling water with tea packets. He poured me some tea and gave it to me; as he sat down next me to. ‘You know Jackferd you are a very brave kid. And I lied to you earlier.’
I was stirring the tea with my pointer finger and looked up at him. ‘What do you mean?’
‘I know what you did to Butch. I saw everything.’
I felt my hands shake. I held my breath. ‘Yeah…so what are you going to do to me?’ I said in one breath.
‘Well we can make it all disappear as if it never happened. As long as you do as I say…’
‘Like do what?’ I looked up at him.
He grabbed my wrist with one hand. His other hand was laid under my chin. He got close to my ear and whispered.
‘I could be you’re father you know? All this bad stuff could go away.’ he said with his disgusting smile.
I pushed him off. ‘No! You’re a f*****g pig!’ I started to walk to the door as fast as I could.
He grabbed my wrist and yanked on me. ‘Common Jackferd.’ I started to scream; scream like the kid I was.
I felt a snap in my throat. I held my neck as I started to run out of his office.
I could taste blood in the back of my mouth but that didn’t stop me from running; and it didn’t stop me crying either. My feet made loud claps as I ran on the tile floor; for what seemed like an hour. No one was up. I tried to find help but no one seemed to be in the area. I didn’t want Mr. Schenck find me alone. He was a f*****g sick pedophile pig that I have no interest in at all; even just as a person.
Finally I found a Nun sitting outside. She was drinking some tea. I tried to scream for her, but my voice was very weak. She found me and gasped. She screamed as I collapsed. My vision went blurry as I herd.
‘It’s going to be okay…”
I smiled and knew I was.
But sadly that was not the case.
