In the City

In the City

A Poem by G. A. Bernard

“In the City"
Worlds colliding each day
The rich and the poor
The unknowns and the famous
The healthy and the ailing
The striking and the unattractive
The happy and the troubled
The young and the old
The pessimists and the optimists
The Liberal and the Conservative
The pious and the atheists
The enslaved and the free
The gay and the straight
The sober and the addicted
All competing to endure another day
Marching in lockstep to the beat of their own drum
Unaware of each other's sorrows and challenges
On this relentless journey toward their unique ending
