“The Punch”

“The Punch”

A Poem by G. A. Bernard

“The Punch”

He saw it coming but too late

He was out before he hit the ice

A large pool of blood formed as he lay there

Initially the crowd cheered then that tribal instinct gave way to one of horror

The enforcer had gone gladiator and his attack was grotesque

The masses were mortified and so outraged that they were calling

for the enforcer’s suspension for life

The enforcer was confused: they had told him that the only way to stay in the league was to fight so he did just that, night after night

He was paid well and glorified in videos

Now he was being vilified for those same actions

The mob had turned on him as they were sickened by the brutality he inflicted

Can we really believe we can have it both ways?
