Red

Red

A Poem by G. A. Bernard

“Red”

Red roses bloomed in the garden

A Cardinal sang his song there too

While the poppy struggled in the wind

The beets underground lay in waiting

And the red wine flowed

The red lipstick caught his eye

But not before the redness in her cheeks and eyes

In this garden the lady in the red hat wept for her loved ones

Long gone now and she wrung her wrinkled hands while her skin wore thin

The red sunset beckoned her to bedtime but she resisted

Knowing the nightmares would come again
