Ascension (Love Is An Elevator)
I don't want to see you like this-
Shaking, upset, losing words in a torrent of frustration and fury.
I long to embrace you- to focus
Every bit of my energy at the point where our hearts touch.
And draw out the cause of your pain,
To take it into myself, for safekeeping.
One alone cannot rid himself of pain-
The masochistic pack rats we are-
Dragging our past with us as we try to move forward.
Digging holes with our weights as we brace ourselves against the onrushing present.
It takes another, an objective outsider-
To cut our ropes of our pain-
So we can rise.
Two is far better than one-
For two, together, can trust one another,
Enough to give their pain to the other-
Allow them to process it and reassure.
The two are crossbeams, each supporting what they build together-
Neither taking the brunt of the weight singularly-
But both lifting one another up.
The shared troubles, a negative force-
One that pulls us in and draws us closer to each other.
