I should've turned back - I should've known better...
Down the Walls
"I should have turned back, I should have known better..."
You paused by the open door,
Neither one of us wanted you to go in-
I could see it in your eyes, yo wanted me to say something-
There was an eagerness there, a hunger, a...
"...then to walk away defeated..."
...a disappointment...
I couldn't bring myself to say it-
To ask the question, couched in high terms and abstract revolutions
A paragraph, which could be summed up in a sentence...
"If love's a word that you say, say it - I will listen."
...which could be summed up in three words-
Three syllables, even- and I couldn't say them!
Not in my high terms- concealing simple thoughts-
And not in the words children giggle through.
I'm not qualified, not for something like this-
Not ready to handle it-
The three words, the hand grenade of the couple-
Don't you see it yet?
"I..."
-can start just about anything-
Congratulations - you've pulled the pin-
Keep a tight grip, there'll be time yet.
"...Love..."
Now the spoon's gone - you can't hold it anymore-
You can either toss it or deflect it-
"...that sweater on you - when did you get it?"
"...You."
It's too late to change it now-
You've thrown your charge-
Now find out how well it works.
No, I couldn't say it - not like that-
Not for all my desire-
Love is not something to be tossed around a corner, fingers planted firmly in ears-
Waiting to find out if it toppled the walls-
It is a whisper, a smile-
The summation of a chestful of feeling-
Concentrated right behind your sternum-
The three words are an expression, an outlet-
A way to transfer the feeling-
To signify something which should have been obvious long before you had to said it-
Yes, children do giggle over them-
But there's no joke in it this time.
The quotes (except "I Love You") came from a couple of AvA songs - "Good Day" and "Start the Machine"... I had them stuck in my head while I was writing this (obviously! :P)
I mean - I picked them for other reasons too - mainly, they fit the situation I was trying to describe... I wanted to see if I could write a poem using the songs cut up like that... just as kindof an exercise... :)
I was told by a friend of mine that I use too many military comparisons... but I really like them... they tend to work well :P
