The Golden Shadow - As the Flames Die

The Golden Shadow - As the Flames Die

A Story by Brandon M. Whittaker
"

This is a story relating to my book The Golden Shadow. It takes place much much later than the first book (it's about twenty years later). The characters are the same (plus some new ones that come in later on in the first book). Tyler obviously has gain

"

"This is...f*****g unbelievable..."  Commander General Tyler Peterson looked down at the corpse in all of its disgusting wonder.  His wife, Medic General Jenna Peterson, and his daughter, Medic Lieutenant Danielle Peterson, stood next to him, blood from several different cuts spotting their bodies.  "What could have possibly done this?  This isn't anything that the Shadow Stealth have shown before.  It's new, they've never been this clever."

"Do you think it could be someone who isn't the Shadow Stealth at all?"  Danielle asked, tilting her head to the side and rustling her staff further into the cold dirt.

"I doubt it..."  Tyler squeezed the hilt of his blade tighter, the blood on the steel dripping soundlessly off the edge.  "Ever since Kyle I beat Kyle and Michael took over, things have been changing.  Nothing is the same in this war anymore, not from when I first joined it."

"Well, then you should still be resourceful enough to combat whatever it is."  Commander General Isaac Peterson stepped up to them.  Isaac turned out to be Tyler's brother after several years of being friends.  When they learned the truth, they understood why they'd gotten along so well.  Isaac had been adopted into a foster family and maintained the last name Weathers for the longest time.

"Where's William and Andrew?"

"They went the other way, they said they've met heavy resistance already.  I've been mind speaking with them literally the entire time.  They're definitely Shadow Stealth...but what I don't understand is why they suddenly got much more advanced and changed their tactics."

"It doesn't matter, what matters is that they've become more sophisticated.  We should move, I don't like just standing here  waiting for something to happen."  Tyler moved while he spoke, and with the wave of his hand, his rifle appeared.  He held it tightly in both hands, knuckles turning white.

They hadn't been moving very long when something appeared only inches from his face.  The foe threw a blow, which Tyler dodged simply by moving his head slightly to the right.  As the fist went past his face, he grabbed the arm and pulled him forward.  Bringing his knee up, he buried it in his enemy's stomach, then twisted so that he was behind the intruder.  Quickly, he took the head in both of his hands and twisted hard.  A crack sounded and the body went limp, falling to the forest floor.

"What in the hell was---"  Three blows caught him in the back and he stumbled forward, then crouched and twisted, kicking the enemy's feet from underneath him.  Tyler's reaction time was faster than that of the Shadow Stealth and he caught him by the throat.  With a small show of magic, he sent a shock through the body and the head exploded.

Tyler stood up and sighed, shaking his head and cleaning off his hands.  "They've definitely become more sophisticated.  I've never seen them use such technology before to conceal their personnel."

"We should probably come up with a name for it..." Jenna said softly, nudging the body with her toe.  "I say Shadow Stalkers."

"I like it.  It makes sense," Danielle responded, and Tyler nodded.

"Let's keep---GOD D****T!"  This time he was cut off by gunfire.  Bullets ripped through the leaves and trunks of trees, hitting the swampy floor with small splashes.  "S**t, get cover!"  A bullet ricocheted off the sheath of his blade and he rolled, then stood.  "I'm sick of this f**k..."  He growled and his arm shot forward, hand open, palm facing the trees that the gunfire came from.  With one strong energy burst, an enormous blast of fire came roaring from his palm and lit the trees in a brilliant explosion.

Screams rose from the tree line and shapes moved, clearly caught aflame.  They flailed, and fell, dying in the flames.  It was only with the light of the flames that his family noticed the ugly look of satisfaction on his face, the twisted smile, the lust in his eyes.

As the flames died, he let out a small chuckle and his arm lowered slowly.

Danielle stared at her father with wide eyes, her hand gripping her staff tighter.  "Mom...I think...I think dad...is losing to his power..."
