Muscle # 1

The gun felt good in my hand, it hung heavy by my leg as I stood there staring into the eyes of my supposed best friend Jason Chase. The same best friend who allowed my wife and child to be left alone unprotected. The same best friend whose crime I took as my own allowing ten years of my life to be stolen on the strength of my love for him. His brown eyes grew wide as I raised the gun up to his face.

“Bunny Stop!” he cried out. “It wasn’t my fault.”

Those words were empty shells that hit me like soft pillows. I shrugged and let them fall out of my ears unbelieved.

“Jason your words. Please shut the f**k up.”

He backed up some more never taking his eyes off mine. He made no move towards the two bulges in his grey suit jacket. No move towards the twin .45s he loved to carry.

“Bunny this doesn’t have to be. We can team together and find the assassin. F**k man Sharon was my friend too.”

Tears welled up in both our eyes as her name penetrated our heart. A motion to my left interrupted the pain I felt and caused me to turn towards it. A large ball headed brick of a man with a shotgun in both his hands now stood to my right.

“Bunny meet your replacement,” smiled Jason.

I nodded to him and he proceeded to nod back but before he could finish one of my bullets was now embedded in his chest. He staggered backwards and squeezed the trigger on his shotgun, erupting pellets into the ceiling. I released another bullet which crashed into his knee sending him to the floor.

“F*****g Bunny still got it! “laughed Jason.

I walked over to the bleeding behemoth and kicked his shot gun away.

“Who did it Jason? “ I said.

His smile disappeared as he looked from me to his dying enforcer.

“You really should think about getting your old job back.”

I sighed as I brought my gun back up into his face. My patience was wearing thin. I couldn’t fight the urges that bubbled up from beneath my anger.

“Remember when we met your wife and you swore to me things wouldn’t change between us? “

I shook my head as I looked at his crumpled body. He was always so sentimental. Always brothers in spirit and blood he always told me. There once was a time I believed it too. A time when there was nothing I wouldn’t do for him. I took ten years away from my family on his word that they would be taken care of.

“Nothing ever changed Jason. I love you like my own brother.”

The gun dropped a little as the words escaped my lips.

“I didn’t kill her Bunny.”

His eyes drifted away from mine as he though of things unbecoming.

“But I knew it would happen,” he finished.

I don’t know what happened in the next few moments. My mind went to a blank and dark place. When I emerged through the tunnel I was on top of Jason with blood splattered all over my face and gun. He laid there underneath me with a hideous bloody smile on his face.

“How does it feel? “ he laughed.

“F**k you Jason. Why did this happen? Who did the killing? Why didn’t you protect them?”

“You’re a liar you know that? Things did f*****g change. The second you met her you changed. The killer I knew turned into a p***y. You were ready to retire because of her.”

He coughed and sprayed blood all over the plain tan carpet. I didn’t blink and pushed my gun into his forehead.

“I knew they were after your girl. The channels were filled with that back talk bullshit for weeks. Then your protégé comes back and tells me that it was all true. A hit was put out on your family. Now the who I don’t f*****g know. The how well any idiot with eyes and ears knows the answer to that.”

He stopped and swallowed something trying to come up from his stomach.

“You loved her more than me and that hurts more than her passing.”

Kill him screamed my conscience. The trigger began to feel light on my finger.

“You let them kill my wife and kid because you were jealous? “

Kill him cried out my conscience and before I could blink the world went white and Jason’s head flew backwards into the wall.
