Imagine Sunset

Imagine Sunset

A Poem by John Arachtingi

Imagine a sunset...
You're standing on the beach, with the soft, warm sand enveloping your toes.
The seagulls seem to pause, each one at his own time, and stare off into the sunset.
What are the seagulls thinking?
Do they wonder what the great light in the sky is?
Do they question where it's going?
Do they ponder whether they will see another sunrise,
Or if the sun will fail to return this time?

I know the light is the Sun, our private star.
I know it rotates out of view each day, as our planet rotates on its axis.
I know that tommorrow will come, because the earth will rotate again,
bringing the light of the sun into view.

How great my understanding is, I fail to see
What I do not understand.
What I do not ask,
Why does the sun light the day?
Why does the earth turn?
Why am I certain that tomorrow will come, when,
For so many people, It does not?

You walk down the beach a ways.
The last glimmer of sunlight falls upon the endless sea.
It seems to hang there, for a moment, and then fades.
The seagulls fly off, one by one, some more pressing business calling them.
You watch them go, as the darkness deepens.

You hear a loved one call to you.
You turn, and leave the sand behind.
