Wish I was your lover..

Wish I was your lover..

A Story by Frozen Eyes
"

All his life he longed to ask her that question..

"

This had been her favorite spot since a few decades now. The old park bench by the lake, the swans playing in the water, the Sun and clouds watching there reflection in the lake, the wooden bridge on the fritz, the stretch of green till the eyes could reach. The familiarity and charm of the place brought her back to this spot time and again. That was a similar evening too.

With a slow and steady pace she walked up to the bridge and stopped at the middle. Bent over the railing a little to see her reflection in the water. The clouds had hid the sun and the breeze was playing its trivial games with her hair. She looked at herself, she had strands of grey hair now, wrinkles and laughter lines on her face. Things had changed so much except for the memories of good old days. She brought out her cellphone, stared at the old snaps of her friends, family and his. A stream of memories unleashed in her head. Her lips curved into a smile and eyes sparkled with tears.

The pain was about to surface again. It felt as if all those conversations between her and 'him' had taken place just yesterday. But then a long time had passed. Before she lost herself in the agony of the past again she wiped the tiny droplet of water trying to escape her eyes and walked back to the park bench.

She had just seated herself and watched a young couple passing by lost in each other's words. Her heart ached a little more. The breeze had stopped, the clouds gotten darker, the sun was nowhere to be seen. She sat there all by herself blended in the ambience.

All of a sudden her phone rang. It was an unknown number. She recieved the call and held up the phone to her ear with a trembling hand. As if she was expecting the unexpected. And from the other end came a gush of very known breath. Her heart skipped a beat. Oh! How she wished she hadn't recieved the call! But now there she was stuck in the wheel of time again.

From the other side came a familiar voice with somewhat unfamiliar tone to it. "Hello is it Miss Marple? Do you remember me? I had waited too long to hear from you the reply to that one question you promised you'd answer- Are you happy?

She knew it was 'him'. In a split second the world around her stood still. Her face turned pale. She could not utter a word. She felt like she was crashing into bits. That one question from that one person she feared she had to answer someday.

The wound she hid all these years was open again. The clouds had seen her pain. They poured like never before.

The voice said again," Miss Marple, are you listening? I'm waiting for your reply, are you happy?"

She closed her eyes and went thirty years back in time...and in her mind she hummed

 "Wish I was your lover!"

I loved the scene you painted in the beginning of the story. It brought me in as though I was standing by the water near her. The progression from her blissful nostolgia gradually morphing into heartache was very smooth, and I thought the weather changing with her mood was a very nice touch. Once again, beautiful!
