Trick 'R Treat?

Trick 'R Treat?

A Poem by Marie

Tall black pointed hat just visible above the wall

as a little child scurries past like a mouse

anxious to get to her next port of call.

Long black shining cloak and broomstick

face masked in paint so white,

she winds her way from door to door

luminescent in the night.

Some doors fail to open to her hearty lusty rap

so she scampers to the next house,

through the hedge she makes a gap

collects her surprise

and places it in her bulging bounty bag.

It is a slice of Báirín Breac

with a hard pea, stick and rag.

When the homes have given up

their tasty treats to all,

the children build a bonfire

with flickering flames so tall

and sitting down beside it

hey sing and laugh and joke,

eating their treats and sharing them

beneath the curling smoke.

All too soon it's time to go,

leave the fire burn down to ashes

and go to bed to dream of ghosts

or Dracula's blood drenched gnashers.

Next Autumn will come soon enough,

again they'll celebrate

Halloween in all its glory

with customs new and late...

You've captured the spirit of Halloween so well with your opening lines. I can see it and hear the laughter they so easily display. We can all remember those times walking from home to home collecting our goodies, having stored away the toothpaste for after. :)

Nice writing, Marie.

A great seasonal poem that portrays many of the aspects of Halloween so well. Nicely rhymed this poem carries the reader on the nightly exploits of the trick or treat festival.
