A Wish Is Granted.

A Wish Is Granted.

A Poem by Marie

The old man sits in his chair

The living room is crowded right up to the door

It’s a very special occasion for him

He’s never had a Birthday Party before

So, family and friends came together that night

To ensure that everything turned out right

Cards and gifts were given in plenty

Received with a smile but his heart was empty

His Mary had died only last year

With sadness, the memory, now caused a tear

He blew out the candles on his Birthday cake

In silence, for a moment, a wish he did make

Then, there was music and laughter so mighty

But he sat alone, feeling his years of eighty

All of a sudden, he saw her there

The light shining on her, dancing glints in her hair

With arms outstretched she invited him to dance

He rose from his chair, not to miss his chance

In her arms he felt happy, so joyous, no care

They danced to the music, with elan and flair

Everyone shocked at his collapse on the floor

A doctor is called, but he is no more

His wish has been granted by "The Birthday Fairy"

In Spirit, he dances with his beloved Mary.

Refreshing read. Happy endings always bring on smiles, this one did very. Although, the gentleman in the poem is no more but his wish being granted to be together with his beloved Mary, is A wish granted well. I could read this in a flash and kind of wanting to read more of it. One other aspect this write touches upon, togetherness and loneliness. these are eternal friends. Thanks Marie for sharing.

Even though the story broke my heart, it is definitely a perfect poem and a perfect narration. Still, I think it's a beautiful ending, right?

Thank you, Thomas...
You know I like happy endings. If only the roomful of living knew his extreme happiness and not just the sad sight of his lifeless body. When the veil becomes so very thin, I believe lost loved ones come by to lead us across, and so his Mary was there for that purpose. Although sad on the surface, this poem reveals the beauty of our existence. I love it.
