Half Past Hell (Quarter 'Til Zion)

Half Past Hell (Quarter 'Til Zion)

A Poem by Freder Fredersen (aka Grady)
"

Religious revolving doors of history! Pick a diety from the Smorgasbord! With blessing gravy!

"

Circling vultures, smiling lions!

Half past Hell and a quarter ‘til Zion.

Pulling out sutures; screaming and crying!

Living in the midst of a culture that’s dying.

On the Vigrid Plain I saw frost flying!

Great Ones clashed hard with angry giants.

Surt and the splendid gods did lock,

And I set new foot on old Ragnarok!

Vikings cried in Ygdrasil tears,

And couldn’t lay waste to the Odin years.

Germanics spit on their frustration

With talk of a four horse Tribulation!

Circling angels, mortals dying!

Half past Hell and a quarter ‘til Zion.

Scorpion tails, breastplates of iron!

Living in the midst of a culture that’s dying.

Meanwhile in the East, far from The Beast,

Old Buddha was trying to think the least.

Tsukiyomi and Amaterasu

Kept the night sky black, and day sky blue.

Zoroaster’s Ahura Mazdah crying!

Allah stomped on the flags they were flying!

Buddha faded into Nirvana sighing!

Half past Hell and a quarter ‘til Zion.

From Vishnu to the Celtic Druids:

I saw it all fall down to ruins!

But all the believers of myth and fact

Couldn’t shake Yahweh from there back!

Jesus rose up from the dying!

Blood washed out all Satan’s prying!

Haven’t got it yet. We're still trying!

Half past Hell and a quarter ‘til Zion.

Circling vultures, smiling lions!

Half past Hell and a quarter ‘til Zion.

Pulling out sutures; screaming and crying!

Living in the midst of a culture that’s dying.

Terrific! Love the wordplay, love the bombast, love the name-dropping. It all fits together and flows like a song (are these lyrics?).

I wonder why they're crying. A little ambiguous. Because of the failures to find the right path? Or the failure to recognize it's a lost cause?

Damn- I wish I wrote this- This makes my "Killing the Buddha" a child's scribbling-..A brilliant piece-masterfully done- There is so much here that it makes my head spin in delight. I don't know which verse I like best -each and every one is a gem- "Half past Hell and a quarter 'till Zion" what a grand apocalyptic statement.

Obviously you have a fine grasp of myth, religions and philosophy- what makes this piece so damn good is it weaves all the grand myths and religions as a backdrop to our own present day approach to Armageddon:

Circling vultures, smiling lions!
Half past Hell and a quarter 'til Zion.
Pulling out sutures; screaming and crying!
Living in the midst of a culture that's dying.

You have all my favorites in this piece- For me this is a Masterpiece Philosophical Poetry at its best-Bravo Bravo-
Now I know you have more- bring it on....

my warmest
bob
