Beneath A Hickory Tree

Beneath A Hickory Tree

A Poem by Franc Rodriguez
"

In the spirit of Sidney Lanier, a poem about the days of yore, between two lovers.

"
O my sweet Kathline nigh,
Thine eyes pretty and fain,
Bear me a smile and a sigh,
For thine handsome swain.

Winsome daisies I reckon,
Growing brisk in meadows,
By yonder girls that beckon,
Within the midst of willows.

Wafting upon the trees dim,
Sheltering blooms in a smell,
Left there by a lover's whim,
O'er the long stems in a dell.

Blossoming forthwith tomorrow,
Before the coming of an e'ening,
With the glee of a lone sparrow,
Amid the prying willows leaning.

Hark the chirping of a new birth,
Amongst those hearts of twain,
By the edge of wondrous mirth,
Till the marsh streaming amain.

Come frolic with me my darling,
Within leaves tawny and crisp,
Under the hickory tree lapping,
The gleam of the willo' the wisp.
