Sultana

Sultana

A Poem by Franc Rodriguez
"

The tale of the lovely Sultana of Al Andalus.

"
Roam within a maze of pillars Sultana,
By mosaic floors in a palace by the lees,
Abreast thick walls of riad with plaster,
And tiles written in Arabic calligraphy.

In the courtyards full with a fain labyrinth,
The glycine alhambras and cypress trees,
With our fond letters of ere hidden away,
In the forlorn walls next to a lovely gallery.

Behold the pavilion by a marble fountain,
Between wrought decorative squinches,
Exuberating a shine of a morning gleam,
Inside a palatial garden of winly draperies.

Lover's whispering innuendos heard nigh,
In an e'entide of rows of ancient niches,
Dress'd Sultana in fringe of silver coins,
And harem pants with rose embroideries.

Shimmering hips of moving undulation,
Within the harmonies of a lute and zither,
With thine hands cover'd in a gentle glow,
In the dark ink shading a beauty of henna.

With the enchantment of gleeful eyelids,
Amid a bright sparkle of a certain glitter,
As thou wert made into such perfection,
By the strong breath of the almighty Allah.

The smell of incense bore wits of angels,
And a spry waft from the patios of mint,
That bewitch'd and enraptur'd thereafter,
A secret of Cordoba that thou shalt not tell.

With the allurement of onyx eyes glar'd,
Before mine own eyes afterwards a glint,
In charms and a mystic lore of Al Andalus,
Under the spell of a queen behind the veil.

Nu'um Safiya, my beloved Sultana....
