The Bells of Big Ben

The Bells of Big Ben

A Poem by Fran Marie
"

for Devons Picture This

"

A symbol of the United Kingdom

standing tall; this british icon

slightly tilting to the northwest

yet, at its best

the bells of Big Ben play on

Tourists come from far and wide

to view its charm

to hear its striking sound

once again

the bells of Big Ben

Taking pictures of the tower

the numbered faces

angles of four places

on the hour

the chiming bells of Big Ben

Ringing in new year's celebration

and remembrance day occasion

the eleventh hour

month and day, this clock has its say

O' hear the bells of Big Ben

An intelligently subtle tribute to a landmark as a 'rock of ages'. The poem gives Big Ben an aura of aloofness and separation from the Times it chimes throughout the generations. It has significance but is mute and dispassionate in its own comparative existence. But to everything and everyone else it is perceived quite differently. It reminds one of the proverbial old tree which 'must have seen some changes over the years', as the cliche goes and yet still it remains while life around it dies and moves on.. It makes me think of something inscribed on a tablet of stone, rather like some obscure epitaph, thoughtfully composed by someone who cared.. Very nicely written, with a charm-like simplicity and arrangement.

And with your written artwork I can picture it vividly and feel the history it represents.
